Ten years ago, in the middle of February, I discovered a number of wasp beetles in our house. According to websites the adult beetles – Clytus Arietis – normally emerge in May. So what was the first one doing on our first floor landing in February? And even more surprisingly, how did another one make it into the kitchen and onto Susan’s toast?
The answer was revealed a couple of days later. I’d brought in some kindling for the fire and left two buckets at the foot of the stairs. On close inspection we found more of them and the holes which they have emerged from. Here we can clearly see the sawdust (is that the right word?) on the beetle’s body.
